Diversity
As a technology facilitator and educator, I have encountered diversity in many ways. Throughout the program, I have acquired knowledge, skills, and dispositions that have equipped me in using technology to meet the needs of all students. In this overview, diversity will include various groups of students such as: ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, students with special needs, etc… The overview will also describe what I’ve learned throughout the completion of the program.
Throughout the program I have acquired knowledge about diversity in relation to technology. As a technology facilitator, I must ensure that special needs classrooms are equipped with appropriate and working Assistive Technology (AT). I learned that assistive technology is any device or service that helps a student with a disability to meet his or her (IEP) goals and to participate in the general education setting to the greatest possible extent. AT provides students with special needs the ability to access to a general education curriculum. As a technology facilitator I will make AT improvements a priority.
Equitable access is one of topic that I have acquired much knowledge over the course of the program. As technology facilitator, I understand that equitable access is ensuring students of different social and economic backgrounds have similar opportunities. Equitable access should be addressed in school settings and within the communities. As a technology facilitator I have the skills to find or design a technology plan that meet the needs of all students regardless of their social or economic status. Allowing all student access to technology and digital citizenship courses is essential to closing the gap. Additionally, students and parents who do not have the appropriate technology at home should be equipped with emerging technology much like their counterparts. Ensuring all students have the same access to similar technology will and continually improve computer literacy and education disadvantaged families. I believe ensuring that all students have equitable access to up to date technology is one of the most important jobs of a technology facilitator. I will be sure to work hard to build relationships with community resources to gain access of funds to execute this movement.
Lastly, I have been given several opportunities to conduct professional development for not only teachers, but also parents. For teachers, I learned that as a technology facilitator, you must hear the needs and wants they have for their diverse learners. It is very important to equip teachers with a variety of digital tools that will not only engage students, but also support their diverse needs. A technology facilitator also ensures that parents with diverse learners are aware of the online tools available at a school. I was able to do this by conducting a parent session at our Open House. In here, I demonstrated to our ESOL parents online tools that their children use at school and can also use at home. Professional development helped me gain knowledge on the way a technology facilitator can support parents, teachers, students and their diverse needs to succeed.
• Working with parents of students in my classroom on how to use various technologies at home
• Sharing information about affordable internet with parents
• Adding AT to IEP to allow student ensure student has efficient access to curriculum
• Making recommendations equitable access at my school
• Sharing information of resources for parents of ESOL students
• Developing lessons to meet the needs of the diverse learners in my classroom
• Providing professional development for teachers to help implement technology to support and meet the needs of their diverse learners
