3.3 Online & Blended Learning
Candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators. (PSC 3.3/ISTE 3c)
Artifact: ITEC 7445 Multimedia Design Project/Webquest
Reflection:
This article is an online learning project that was developed for fourth grade students in a science class. The project was designed in a way where students were engaged through a competition for becoming the top weather channel meteorologist. The artifact was created in a way where students first got to learn about three tragic weather events that occurred in three different locations of the world. One of the disasters chosen was a local event that many of the students have heard about when they were younger. The project was planned for students to work together before submitting the final challenge of the project which is to submit a one-minute video where the students had to take the role of a meteorologist. The artifact was also used to model and help teachers expand their opportunities in understanding how to implement blended learning into the regular classroom curriculum.
The artifact of the webquest demonstrates the mastery of standard 3.3 because it provides students with various types of digital content and opportunities for students to communicate. Some of the digital content included in the project was online videos, digital handouts, online articles, and hands on experiments where digital content was used. Students also had to use recording resources to film their one-minute video that was a requirement for their final assignment. The artifact also extends student learning because they were asked to take a role into competing to become the top weather channel meteorologist. The artifact also masters the communication of the standard because the project itself encourages and engages students into communicating with one another in order to finish it.
Communication play a big role into this artifact for it to be successful. The project also puts the teacher as a facilitator where the communication piece also comes into place. This in return creates a positive, learning community that supports the various learning styles found in a classroom.
This artifact taught me the importance of finding good, quality digital content to help students extend their learning and opportunities. I also learned how to create and develop a project where blended learning could be implemented with the curriculum that the students were already learning. This was a different learning experience because the learning was completely done online, and this is something students have never experienced before. If I were to create this artifact again, I would include other methods for students to create and submit their one-minute video. Rather than having all students record with the media resources we have in our school, I would add online video recording tools that they can use such as Adobe Spark, Flipgrid, and Screencastify. Including these resources could help students record each other with the use of their Chromebooks.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted my professional development by giving me the opportunity to complete an assignment for my students that was completely online. This artifact helped me understand how online learning and traditional schooling have similarities and differences. The work can be assessed by the project itself and the work assigned for the students and the professional learning shared with the teachers regarding how to create a webquest.
