Artifact: WCS Professional Development-Lexia Core
Reflection:
This artifact is a sample of the professional development that as an ESOL teacher I have been receiving to support the needs of my students. The artifact shows a sample of handouts I received during a professional learning session in the beginning of the school year for the online tool Lexia. This is not the first time a professional learning session has geared its attention towards education. The professional learning that took place in August taught us about Lexia, an online tool that we use to help support our new to the country students that need a more intense intervention to ensure they learn the English language. The training focused on learning how to use the resources offered for the parents of our newcomer students who use Lexia.
This artifact demonstrates the mastery of standard 6.1 because it shows my continual growth in knowledge and skills of the current technology, we use with our newcomer students, Lexia. This training was very important for all ESOL teachers to receive because there is a current concern on improving the ways we are supporting the parents of students who use the program Lexia at school. The artifact also demonstrates my growth in knowledge because due to being new to the ESOL department in my school, I am not very familiar with the tool Lexia Core. This gave me the opportunity to learn more about this helpful program for my ESOL students. Also, many of our parents are not familiar with Lexia Core, so this helped me gather the proper information for them to understand how the program functions.
Prior to the completion of this artifact, I was not familiar with the online tool Lexia and the benefits it brings to our ESOL students at school. It helped improve my professional practice and my knowledge of the tool Lexia. I learned about the resources it has for parents and the ways they can use this helpful program at home. The professional learning training also taught me how ESOL teachers in my school are embracing technology when working with their students to help gain the academic language that can be very difficult to learn and understand. However, Lexia is one of the newest programs we have added to use with our students. I found this artifact very beneficial because it helped my understanding on how the program works and the ways that it can be implemented with newcomer students. The professional learning artifact also taught me the importance we should put to learn how to share online tools with parents. As mentioned before, many of our parents are not familiar with the program Lexia, but I hope that this training opens a door to teach them about it. Lastly, this artifact gave me ideas on how emerge the program Lexia and other tools to help my ESOL students feel successful. The parents of our newcomer students received the information about Lexia Core and its parent resources during Open House. If I could make this experience better, I would offer different methods for parents to hear what I learned in this session. One way would be online through our school’s Facebook page, where I would livestream live to accommodate those parents who are not able to attend a face to face meeting to hear about Lexia Core.
The work that went into completing this artifact impacted student learning. I found that students enjoy using Lexia Core when learning English. The artifact also made an impact in their parents, because they were able to learn about the tools Lexia Core has for them in their website. The impact of this artifact can be assessed by observing me using Lexia Core in my classroom. The impact can also be assessed by seeing the interactions of parents of newcomers with the program Lexia Core.
