Artifact:ITEC 7445 Copyright Assignment
Reflection:
This artifact is a copyright assignment that I completed for the ITEC 7445 class last school year. The artifact is a powerpoint presentation over copyright in regards of using digital pictures. The presentation covers the definition of copyright and the advantages of having photographs being copyrighted. It also includes the steps required for teachers to copyright their images and illustrations. Lastly, in the end of the presentation, I added what if scenarios that leave readers guessing what would happen if certain actions were to take place.
The copyright assignment demonstrates the master of standard 4.2. The presentation was created to inform educators about protecting and copyrighting their work. It provides teachers with a reference guide to use resources ethically and explains how and why to apply for copyright permits for their own work. The copyright also models and facilitates teachers to understand how to safely use digital images in any type of project or document.
This presentation taught me a lot regarding copyright laws and the process it takes to protect your work and the work of others. I decided to choose the area of images for this copyright assignment because any teacher that is out there looking for resources has heard of Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT). If not, this is a tool where educators are able to purchase or find resources free of charge that other creators have created. Educator websites like TPT has continuously ensure their sellers’ materials are protected through the copyright laws that are online. There have been many cases where a seller’s material has been duplicated by another person without requesting permission to use the images. This is the reason why I chose to focus on images, because we need to ensure if we are creating our own content to use in our classrooms is authentic and not just a copycat of someone else who took the time to do it.
This artifact also gave me the opportunity to dig deeper into the advantages of having images copyrighted and what is means for people such as the educators who are sellers are TPT. I am assuming that TPT was one of the reasons why the need to stay informed about copyright for digital images has become so popular in the last few years. Creating this presentation helped me understand where to go obtain this information in order to obtain copyright protection and ensure copyright laws are being followed. If I were to complete this presentation again, I would share this information to other educators besides those working in my school. I know there is a larger audience in my district that would benefit from hearing this information. It is very important to understand your rights and copyright protection for documents that are created. I learned a great deal in regards of not just copyright of images, but everything that can be posted online such as videos, quotes, lyrics, and among other things.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted the faculty’s understanding of copyright laws and the proper procedure required to gain copyright protection for documents that include images that are created by educators. The impact of this presentation can be assessed by sending a survey to investigate teachers insight of the presentation and to determine if they felt it was helpful or not. Copyright is definitely a topic that anyone who is creating documents or own images should be aware of and understand the benefits.
