2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
Artifact: ITEC 7400 Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
This artifact was one of the first lesson plans that I completed during this program, and it was such a great way to start the program. This exemplar lesson plan was designed as a model that showcases innovative uses of technology that support Engaged Learning (EL) Indicators. These indicators include higher-order thinking, collaboration, student roles, teacher roles, authenticity, differentiation, and culturally-responsible pedagogy.
This lesson plan demonstrates mastery of the above standard because it addresses many components of the Indicators of Engaged Learning. The Indicators of Engaged Learning ensure students are engaged in authentic learning experience. The lesson plan is engaging and authentic because students assume the role of scientists, meteorologists, and news reporters. Students had different roles to choose from to complete a final product of filming a forecast script. While completing the learning tasks students had the opportunity to review all the weather information learned via a Kahoot. Students also investigated how meteorologists go about gathering the data they later deliver in the news.
Prior to the start of the project, students received a visit from a local meteorologist that works at a local news station in Chattanooga. This gave students the opportunity to learn first-hand the role and tasks of this job. The meteorologist also became part of the project by becoming a mentor of my students during their completion of the project. Students were able to reach out to her for questions and ideas. Throughout their learning experience, students engaged through the use of various digital tools. For the culminating product, students work in pairs to create an informational and multimedia project that was later shared with peers, parents, school and the mentor/guest that we had from the local news station.
After completing this artifact, I learned the benefits of designing engaging and authentic learning experiences. Authentic learning experiences allow students to make connections to real world jobs. It also challenges students to use higher order thinking skills. It was clear to me that planning authentic learning experiences was not hard, but required another level of planning. I would have liked to have access to more resources. One change I would make to make this artifact more authentic to my students is turning it into a contest where the best finished project would be showcased at the local news station that our meteorologist mentor/guest works for. I would also involve her more by having her help me judge the forecast scripts my students created and have her pick one that would later be shown on the evening news. The chosen winner/s would also travel to help our meteorologist guest give the forecast of one of the days in the week.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted faculty development by allowing me to model and share authentic learning experiences with teachers. This artifact gave teachers the knowledge of the Indicators of Engaged Learning that are needed to provide authentic learni
