Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Facebook Grade Level Page
Reflection:
This artifact is the grade level Facebook page that we used last year to help us communicate with parents, students and other teachers in our building. The purpose of these two artifacts was to help us keep all parties with important dates, resources to use at home and to post virtual homework that we wanted our students to complete. The Facebook group page was also used to post pictures of students completing various engaging activities in our classrooms. This helped our parents and the students see what was happening in our classrooms during the day.
The group page demonstrates mastery of standard 3.7 because it showcases how well I can utilize a digital platform to communicate about various topics. Having a Facebook group allows me to spread meaningful information in the field of instructional technology locally and globally with students, parents, and peers. Various of our school business partners joined the Facebook group to learn about the different activities our students completed throughout the school year. The Facebook group was also a place where I got to share multiple Web 2.0 tools that parents could try at home with their children.
The online tools were also posted with resources within them that parents could use to help their children study for an upcoming assessment. The parents found this very beneficial because they were able to have a visual like a video that helped them understand the important vocabulary students were learning in class and were going to be assessed on. Most importantly, parents like the posting of different math videos that our grade level math teacher and I posted. Parents felt appreciative because they were able to understand the math strategies in fourth grade which in return benefited when it came time to complete math homework.
I learned many things while completing this artifact. I enjoyed posting about multiple online tools and homework resources for my parents and students to see at home. The Facebook grade level group helped me stay communicated with my students while they were at home. The group also helped me stay in touch with the parents in our grade level since many of them couldn’t always come to parents conferences due to conflict in work schedules. If I were to change anything about this artifact, I would add more postings during the week for my non-English parents. It was difficult finding Spanish speaking resources that these parents could use at home in order to help their children with homework. I would also try to have a monthly or weekly Q/A with parents where they could ask generic questions about the content our students were learning or to model reading and math strategies to use at home.
The work that went into crating this artifact can impact student learning and faculty development because of the amount of information found in the Facebook group. The page provides parents and students with numerous information that help increase knowledge in students. The Facebook group page also offers multiple online tools for parents to use with their children at home. The impact can be assessed by the usage of the group page by teachers, parents, and students.
