Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
The SWOT provides an in-depth analysis of the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities and threats of the essential conditions needed to provide effective technology implementation. This artifact was specifically created to determine the currently reality of technology professional development and technology implementation at my school, Dug Gap Elementary. I assessed the conditions of my school by giving the Essential Condition Survey and completing the ISTE Lead and Transform Diagnostic Tool. After the data was collected from both sources, I charted the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and recommendation for improvement for each condition.
This SWOT artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard 1.2 because it showcases how I facilitated the evaluation of technology use, implementation, and professional development. Eight of the ISTE Essential Conditions needed to effectively implement technology were used to assess the current reality of the school’s technology plan. I found there to be many strengths in all areas, but threats and opportunities were also highlighted in the document.
After completing the ISTE Lead and Transform Diagnostic Tool and using the Essential Conditions Survey, I communicated the recommendations needed more effectively implement the available technology at Dug Gap Elementary. All recommendations were developed based on professional research resources. The recommendations were later presented to the technology and leadership at my school. The results of the SWOT artifact were also available for the staff of the school to help them understand the outcomes and ways to help improve the way technology was currently being used.
While completing the artifact, I leaned a great deal about technology. The artifact showed me that technology goes beyond the basic knowledge teachers know about it. Prior to the start of the specialist program, I thought that each school’s technology plan would look similar, much like the school improvement plans. It was very eye opening for me to see the variations in the technology plans. I also learned what items needs to be included in the technology plan and the conditions that should be in place to ensure technology implementation is effective in my school. I think one change I wish that I would have been able to obtain more responses for the Essentials Conditions Survey. I only received a small number from the entire staff. Having a higher number would have given me a better picture of teacher responses regarding technology.
The work that went into creating this artifact taught me how to be a better technology leader. As a technology leader, I feel more knowledgeable to improve the awareness of essential guidelines for developing this artifact and developing an effective technology plan. The impact it made in me as a technology leader can also be assessed in the ISTE Lead and Transform Diagnostic Tool.
